History of General Tadeusz Kościuszko Square in Wrocław
Square T. Kościuszki in Wrocław – a representative square in Wrocław in Przedmieście Świdnickie,
within the Old Town district, at the intersection of Tadeusza Kościuszki and Świdnicka streets. The
square has an area of about 2 hectares. Until 1945, it was called (Tauentzienplatz) in honor of the
Prussian general Friedrich Bogislav von Tauentzien (1710-1791), whose tomb and monument were
located in the central part of the square and was set around this building after the demolition of the
fortifications in 1807. Today, in this place there is the Fighting Solidarity Square, the composition
of which is surrounded by a memorial stone in its center in honor of the Fighters for National and
Social Liberation.
The buildings surrounding the square were erected in the 1950s, with the exception of three that
survived the battle for Wrocław in 1945. These are architecturally typical buildings in Poland of that
period, they have four floors and an attic. Service and commercial functions are provided on the
ground floor.
The roofs of the buildings are sloping and covered with tiles. The three surviving buildings were
incorporated into the new development, and this is today's Savoy Hotel, Renoma Department Store
(former Wertheim Department Store) and the former Santander Bank Polska (former Dresden
Bank).
Juliusz Słowacki (1809-1849) was in Wrocław in 1831 and in 1848. During the second visit (from
May 9 to July 8), the poet lived with a German family at ul. Świdnicka.
He wrote to his mother in detail that „it's the second floor and the doorbell is on the right”. He asked
that correspondence to him be addressed to Mr. Stahlschmidt, residing at ul. Dworcowa
5 (Bahnofstrasse), or to Zofia Mielęcka, who lives at pl. T. Kościuszki 69 (former
Tauentzienstrasse). In 1959, the Society of Wrocław Enthusiasts unveiled a plaque commemorating
the stay of our bard in Wrocław, and it was embedded in the wall of the building at pl. T. Kościuszki
13/1a. The square is considered the most beautiful in Wrocław.
